Every Child is Special and Pratham’s journey of 20 long years has strived to reach out to the most vulnerable children.

Pratham with the vision to work with “Every child in School and Learning Well” has been engaged in working across the country with children living in disadvantaged communities.  Even among these children there are those who are especially vulnerable, at risk and therefore out of school.

Pratham covers over 1500 differently abled children annually through their outreach and educational programs. Out of these, 600 children appear for examinations under the Pratham NIOS (National Institute for Open Schooling) OBE (Open Basic Education) program which certifies them with a recognised degree. This provides them with opportunities to explore different career options.

In the last 5 years, Pratham has brought 3,500 children with disabilities back to school in Mumbai who had dropped out of school earlier. On evaluating their recent status of school retention, it was overwhelming to see that only 12% of these children had dropped outowing to reasons like lack of transportation, accessible infrastructure and many more.

Rehabilitation services are farfetched for children living in disadvantaged communities, to curb this gap Pratham Council for Vulnerable Children (PCVC)designed a unique Community Adoption program which consists of  Disability Certification Drives, Awareness Programs, School enrolment drives, Corrective Surgeries for Children, Computer training, Assistive Device Camps and Resource centre and makes services easily available to children.

This one of a kind model provides a myriad of rehabilitative services to children like therapy, remedial and support classes, all under one roof. Another exclusive program “The Parents Empowerment Model” designed by Pratham empowers parents to become therapists and educators for their child. Additionally, we have designed training material on Disability Sensitisation, Early Detection, Intervention and Inclusive Education.

All our programs are programs are initiated in collaboration with the Municipal Corporations, Education and Social Welfare departments As part of Pratham's commitment to have Every Child in School and Learning Well we reach out ahd help benefit lives of children with special needs.

10 year old Yusuf (name changed) faced great difficulty while growing up. He could not walk properly, his speech was delayed and he had extremely low confidence. He dropped out of school as his parents could not spare time to carry him there daily. After a few preliminary tests Mohammad was operated on both his legs. Crutches helped him straighten out his legs and regain balance. With constant practice and physiotherapy he will be able to gradually walk on his own. This has not only boosted his morale, but he feels confident to step into school again. His siblings cannot wait to play with him running out in the open.

11 year old Rahul (name changed) is bravely facing hearing problems while learning words at Pratham. He will be soon provided with a hearing aid post the necessary tests. He has shown a keen interest in music lessons conducted by Pratham as a part of his therapy. He is one of the brightest students and has shown considerable progress in reading and writing. His mother recalls him being a shy, timid boy prior to his enrolment in the program. She today feels very happy seeing her son’s development.

5 year old Pranav (name changed) was born with complications in his brain. The surgical insertion of a tube led to an unpredicted limping in his left wrist and ankle. As part of the therapy at Pratham, Deepak works on his wrist through activities like clapping, picking up bits of paper and jumping. He has shown tremendous improvement and with his enthusiasm, he wins hearts of many at the centre.
