History

Bihar started working with vulnerable children in 2002 when it was found out that a high percentage of the children rescued in Mumbai were from this state. As rescued child workers were sent back to Bihar a strong need was felt to receive, counsel and rehabilitate them. There was also a strong need to raise parental awareness on the situation of working children in Mumbai to prevent more children from getting into the labour market.

In 2005, the first Pratham shelter was opened in Sitamarhi (one of the high sending districts) to cater to the needs of the most vulnerable children. The same year we also started educational activities for children working in Patna Brick Kilns and Hobby classes for children working in zari and leather industries. All these children were enrolled into school, in collaboration with the Education Department.

We gradually also engaged in the process of tracking children in high sending areas from where children were being trafficked for work and we are actively collaborating with the Labour Department since 2006 to withdraw children from work.

Especially given that majority of the children we rescued from work in large metros tend to originate from Bihar, Uttar Pradesh, and Nepal. Today, our urban intervention model and Drop In Centre Program is operational in 7 disadvantaged communities in Patna City, where we are working extensively in Mahadalit / Musahar communities and have been focusing on advocacy through frequent meetings and regular dialogue with District Officers, Block Officers and other Government officials. Our rural focus comprises the FBI Program which is operational in 111 villages in East Champaran District and is focused on spreading awareness on child rights and volunteer mobilization.
