Disability Program

While working in communities on the issue of child labour we have come across children with various kinds of disabilities ranging from motor disabilities to cerebral palsy. One of the observations made was that most of the families of these children due to their lower economic and educational background did not have access to and knowledge of rehabilitative services.

PCVC did not possess the expertise to work with this group of special children. One of our biggest strengths however has been our grassroots presence, our ability to mobilize the community and our networking strategies. It is these strengths that we aim to put to use when working with this group with the following objectives:

Referral services:

  • Creating a database of services both governmental and non-governmental
  • Linking the children and the families to resources both governmental and non-governmental
  • Collaboration with the Municipal and Government agencies for the efficient delivery of services

Working with Families and Communities:

  • Increase the awareness of parents through Parent trainings
  • Developing preventive care through awareness programs at community level

Direct intervention:

  • Establishing a remedial approach through medical camps for the children
  • Dealing with individual cases from need assessment to provision of appropriate services; with a target of 300 such cases in the next year
Achievements
  • PCVC has worked in collaboration with the Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan (SSA) to organise 5 medical camps for children with various disabilities
  • Through our networking with various organisations we have helped over 1000 children obtain various aids like callipers, crutches, wheel chairs, hearing aids
  • Through the medical assessment camps we have helped 50 children obtain disability certificates which enables them to avail of various government services
